The trees will grow large, the people will have few of the three poisons, and the populace will have many settlements. The city will be named Vārāṇasī. There will be a brahmin named Subrahma who will become Maitreya's father, and \[his mother\] named Brahmavatī. Maitreya will become their son, fully endowed with the physical marks, sixteen zhang in height. When born, he will fall upon the city ground; his eyes will see clearly within ten thousand li, and the sunlight in his head will shine four thousand li. When Maitreya attains the Way and becomes a Buddha, he will sit beneath the Dragon Flower Tree. The tree will be thirty li tall and forty li wide. (The Da chengfo jing states that because the flowers and branches resemble dragon heads it is named Dragon Flower Tree; there is also another tradition that because the seed emerged from the dragon palace it is called Dragon Flower Tree.) On the eighth day of the fourth month, when the morning star appears, he will attain the Way. Maitreya Buddha, after sixty billion and sixty myriad years remain, will then descend."
