> "'If one delights in direct contemplation, begin from the wondrous spiral curls upon the Buddha's crown, like black silk curling clockwise. Next, contemplate the Buddha's face. Having contemplated the Buddha's face, contemplate the body fully, gradually descending to the feet. Moving back and forth in this way for a total of fourteen times, carefully contemplate a single image, making it extremely clear. Once the contemplation of one image is accomplished, whether emerging from samādhi or entering samādhi, one constantly sees a standing image before oneself. Seeing one distinctly, next visualize two images; having done so, next visualize three images, up to visualizing ten, making them all distinct. Having seen ten images, visualize a single room filled with Buddha images with no empty space between them. Having filled one room, make further energetic progress: burn incense, scatter flowers, sweep the stūpa, plaster the ground, bathe the Saṅgha, and make offerings to one's teachers, monks, parents, and so on; then make a great vow: "I now contemplate the Buddha; by this merit, I do not wish for rebirth among humans or devas, or for the paths of śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas; I wish solely and exclusively to seek the Buddha's path of bodhi." Having made this vow, to the utmost seeking the Mahāyāna, one should practice repentance, entreat all Buddhas, rejoice in merits, and dedicate them. Straightening the body and sitting upright, tying mindfulness before oneself, make the realm of the Buddha gradually expand: a single monastic quarter filled with Buddha images, their bodies sixteen feet high, with lotus flowers beneath their feet, halos one fathom wide, light enveloping their entire bodies, as well as numerous transformation Buddhas and the Buddha's attendants, all their rays of light and various colors being clear and distinct. Having filled a single monastic quarter, further expand it to one qing, then a hundred qing, and far off filling a hundred yojanas, seeing all the images with their marks and signs brilliantly clear. Once this visualization is accomplished, visualize the entire Jambudvīpa filled with Buddha images, and the other three continents fully pervaded as well. With body and mind joyful, redouble one's vigor, respectfully holding overhead the twelve divisions of scriptures before the prajñāpāramitā, casting the five limbs to the ground in sincere repentance. When this mindfulness and visualization are accomplished, close the eyes, clasp the hands, sit upright in proper meditative absorption, and further project one's visualization far off: seeing the realms of the ten directions filled with images, their bodies of pure golden color, all the pores of their bodies emitting light, each ray of light possessing hundreds of millions of jewel colors, and within each color immeasurable mixed colors, wondrous realms all naturally welling forth. When this contemplation is accomplished, it is called contemplating the standing image. One who performs this contemplation eliminates the sins of birth and death for sixty billion kalpas; this is also called beholding the Buddha. In future eras, one will encounter the thousand Buddhas of the Wise Kalpa as one's upādhyāyas, leave the household life in sequence within the Buddhadharma, hear the Buddhas' preaching, and retain it without forgetting. Before the Buddha Light in the Constellation Kalpa, one will receive vyākaraṇa in person. If meditating on an image with a coarse mind still yields such immeasurable merit, how much more so tying one's mindfulness to contemplate the light of the white curl between the Buddha's eyebrows!'"
