> As the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra states: When evil speech insults and reviles, an inferior person cannot endure it, like stones raining upon birds. When evil speech insults and scolds, a great person can endure it, like flowers raining upon an elephant. A practitioner should always contemplate the fundamental causes and conditions of the other person: perhaps in the past they were my parent, who reared my body without shrinking from sin or merit; since I have not yet repaid their kindness, why should I give rise to anger? Or perhaps they were my sibling, wife, child, or relative; or perhaps they are a noble one, who in the past was a good friend—worldly sentiment does not recognize this, so why inflict slander \[upon them\]?
