> Furthermore, the Nirvāṇa-sūtra says: For the sake of the Dharma, the Bodhisattva gouged out his body to make lamps, wrapped his flesh with cloth, poured clarified butter over it, and burned it as wicks. The Bodhisattva at that time underwent this great suffering, and reprimanded his own mind, saying: "Such suffering as this does not amount to even a hundred-thousandth part of the suffering in the hells. For immeasurable hundreds of thousands of kalpas you have undergone great suffering and affliction without any benefit. If you cannot endure this slight suffering, how will you be able to rescue suffering sentient beings in the hells?" When the bodhisattva mahāsattva practiced this contemplation, his body felt no pain, and his mind did not retreat, did not waver, and did not turn back. The Bodhisattva at that time should deeply know: "I will definitely attain anuttarā saṃbodhi." The Bodhisattva at that time, though fully possessed of afflictions none of which had been severed, for the sake of the Dharma was able to give his head, eyes, marrow, brain, hands, feet, blood, and flesh to sentient beings, drive nails into his body, and throw himself from cliffs into fire. Though the Bodhisattva at that time underwent such immeasurable sufferings, his mind did not retreat, did not waver, and did not turn back. The Bodhisattva should know: "I now definitely possess an irreversible mind, and shall attain anuttarā saṃbodhi."
