### [10.39](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2123.10.39)

> Furthermore, the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: 'The first five pāramitās are compared to blind persons; the sixth, prajñā, is like having eyes. If they do not obtain the guidance of prajñā, the first five will fall into the evil destinies and fail to transcend the world.' If, hearing that Dharma giving surpasses relinquishing wealth, foolish people do not understand and immediately hoard wealth, only delighting in reading sūtras, if they practice this method, it is not as good as someone who with an understanding mind gives away a single coin, which surpasses reading millions of sūtra scrolls with a deluded mind. Therefore, in establishing the teachings, the Tathāgata's intent was to balance understanding and practice. If there is only understanding without practice, understanding is hollow; if there is only practice without understanding, practice is isolated. One must possess both understanding and practice to reach the other shore. If there is only understanding without practice, it is like a person who has eyes but no feet, unable to travel far; if there is only practice without understanding, it is like a person who has feet but no eyes, unable to see the path. Furthermore, understanding alone without practice is like wild blossoms that do not bear fruit; practice alone without understanding is like fruit that does not emerge from blossoms. Therefore, understanding and practice must proceed together to achieve the fruit of buddhahood.
