> Furthermore, turning away from wholesome paths is not a preliminary preparation, but cultivating wholesome paths of action is a preliminary preparation, because one is distanced from the primary act and distanced by preliminary preparation. As for what is called preliminary preparation: take a novice who wishes to receive the full precepts; being brought to the ordination platform, he bows to the feet of the saṃgha, then requests an upādhyāya, receives the three robes, and begins the first motion. Up to the time the second motion is made, all of these are called prior attendant acts. From the third motion until the conclusion of the karmavācanā, the physical activity initiated and the unmanifest activity arising from that thought are all called the primary path of action. Subsequently, the proclamation of the four reliances down to never renouncing the wholesome conduct received, the manifest and unmanifest bodily and vocal activities—all such things are called posterior attendant acts.
