> The principles of karma indeed have many strands; / The paths of birth are not of a single gate. / Safety and peril truly take different ruts; / How could purity and defilement share the same source? / When the body falls, it leaves only a vacant form; / The spirit, seeking scents, departs. / Downward on the dark road, desolate and forlorn; / Upward on the bright path, soaring and fluttering. / Chilled shadows are bleak and bitter; / Loud voices clamor and ring out. / Throwing oneself to take shelter in a thatched hut; / Gladdening the mind, entering a garden of flowers. / Between husband and wife, passions mostly bring confusion; / Craving and anger cause them to darken themselves. / He of universal knowledge is called the Supreme Awakened One; / Raising his hand, he alone is the most venerable.
