As for what is called 'regret': if there were restlessness without regret, it would not constitute a hindrance. Why? Because during restlessness, one is still engaged with sensory objects; later, when wishing to enter absorption (dhyāna), one only then regrets what was done before, and grief and vexation cover the mind; therefore it is called a hindrance. This has two kinds: First is giving rise to regret because of prior restlessness, as explained above. Second is a person who has committed great and heavy sins, constantly harboring dread; the poisoned arrow has penetrated the heart, firmly stuck and unable to be pulled out.
