> Next, according to the śāstra, quoting from the sūtras of the Bhagavat, it states: "When three things come together, one enters the mother's womb: the parents both have minds of defilement and unite; the mother's body is adjusted, healthy, and free from disease at that time; and the gandharva is directly present. At that time, this gandharva has two minds manifest alternately, and enters the mother's womb." In this, the coming together of three things means: first, the parents' affectionate intercourse; second, the mother's body being adjusted at that time; and third, the gandharva being directly present at that time. "The parents both have minds of defilement and unite" means that both parents give rise to sexual desire and unite together. "The mother's body is adjusted at that time" means that when the mother gives rise to desire, her body and mind are joyful, which is called the body being adjusted. Masters of the Vinaya say: "Because the mother gives rise to desire, her body and mind are turbid, just as spring and summer waters flow turbidly and cannot restrain themselves; this is called the body being turbid." The mother's womb is pure, without wind, bile, and phlegm mutually intensifying and tormenting her; hence it is called "free from disease." Due to this, during the nine or ten months, she can support the fetus so that it is not damaged. "At that time" means that women have an impure occurrence; every month there is constantly a flow of blood and fluid. If this is excessive, because it is watery and damp, the fetus cannot form; if this is too little, because it is dry and thick, the fetus also cannot form. If this blood and fluid is neither too little nor too much, neither dry nor damp, only then can the fetus form; this is called "at that time," because it is the time for the intermediate existence to enter the womb. That is to say, at the final moment of the mother's blood and fluid, two drops remain; at the final moment of the father's semen, one drop remains; when they unite with each other, only then can the fetus form. "And the gandharva is directly present" means that this intermediate existence is present right here, not in another place, neither earlier nor later. "At that time, this gandharva has two minds manifest alternately, and enters the mother's womb" means that when the gandharva is about to enter the womb, two minds—attachment and aversion—alternately arise toward the father and the mother, and only then can it enter the womb. If it is a male intermediate existence about to enter the womb, it gives rise to attachment toward the mother and aversion toward the father.
