> Second: The suffering of being obstructed by desires. In discussing the faults of desires, they are the evil Māra of the five desires and the vicious thieves of the six sense objects, which the Buddha judged to be false delusions, confusing and obstructing the buddha-nature. Therefore, the Nirvāṇa Sūtra states: "Although the five consciousnesses of sentient beings are not a single thought, they are nonetheless tainted, and furthermore, being erroneous and inverted, they increase all taints. All ordinary beings attach to forms, and so on up to attaching to consciousness. Because they attach to forms, a mind of greed arises; because a mind of greed arises, they are bound by forms, and so on up to being bound by consciousness. Because they are bound, they cannot escape birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, great suffering, and all afflictions." It also states: "If there is a bodhisattva who claims his precepts are pure, and although he does not engage in union with a woman, speak playfully with her, or listen to her voice, yet when he sees a man pursuing a woman, or a woman pursuing a man, he immediately conceives greedy attachment—such a bodhisattva accomplishes the dharmas of desire, breaks the pure precepts, defiles and degrades his brahmacarya, and renders his precepts impure; he cannot be called fully endowed with pure precepts."
