> Furthermore, the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: "Wealth and material goods are the causes and conditions for various afflictions and sinful karmas. If one maintains precepts, dhyāna-concentration, wisdom, and various wholesome dharmas, these are causes and conditions for nirvāṇa. For this reason, wealth and goods should be discarded by oneself, so how much more should they be given away in a good puṇyakṣetra? For example, there were two brothers, each carrying ten pounds of gold as they traveled. Along the road there were no other companions. The elder brother thought: 'Why shouldn't I kill my younger brother and take the gold? In this vast road no one will know.' The younger brother also gave rise to the thought of wanting to kill the elder brother and take the gold. The brothers each harboring an evil mind, their speech and looks were both unusual. The brothers then each awoke to themselves and gave rise to repentance: 'We are not humans; how are we different from beasts? Born of the same parents as brothers, yet for a little gold we gave rise to an evil mind!' The brothers together came to the side of a spring. The elder brother threw his gold into the water; the younger brother said, 'Excellent, excellent!' The younger brother also cast his gold into the water; the elder brother said, 'Excellent, excellent!' The brothers asked one another, 'Why did you say "Excellent"?' Each answered the other, 'Because of this gold, I gave rise to an unwholesome mind, wanting to harm you; now having been able to discard it, I therefore said "Excellent."' Both had spoken in the same manner. By this cause and condition, one should always abandon \[wealth\] oneself."
