> "During the Bhadrakalpa, in the kingdom of Vārāṇasī, a Buddha appeared in the world named Kāśyapa. In his Dharma, there was a Tripiṭaka bhikṣu who led five hundred disciples travelling to other countries. While discussing together in a great assembly, there was an interlocutor whose question he could not resolve. He then gave rise to anger and in turn reviled them, saying, 'None of you understand anything, yet you stubbornly raise difficult questions to me, just like water buffaloes charging and goring people!' At that time, the disciples all agreed with him, and they dispersed. Due to the causes and conditions of this evil karma of speech, for five hundred lifetimes he was born among water buffaloes, and the herdsmen followed along with him, even down to the present day, still not having attained release." The Buddha told the bhikṣus, 'If you wish to know who that Tripiṭaka bhikṣu was, it was the vicious water buffalo in this herd today. Those who were his disciples at that time are the five hundred herdsmen today.' When the Buddha spoke of the causes and conditions of this water buffalo, each guarded their own karma of body, speech, and mind, developed revulsion toward birth and death, and attained the four fruits of a śramaṇa, while some gave rise to the aspiration for anuttara-bodhi. Hearing what the Buddha said, they rejoiced and put it into practice.
