Wine has thirty-six faults: straying from the Way, ruining the family, endangering the body, and losing one's life all arise from it. It pulls east and drags west, holds south and sticks north. One is unable to chant the sūtras, does not respect the Three Honored Ones, treats teachers and friends with disdain, and is unfilial to parents. The mind is closed and thought obstructed; for lifetimes one is foolish, not encountering the Great Way, and the mind is devoid of understanding. Therefore, one does not drink wine. Wishing to transcend the five aggregates, the five desires, and the five hindrances, and to attain the five spiritual superknowledges and cross beyond the five destinies, one does not drink wine."
