> Furthermore, the Vinayamātṛkā states: The Venerable Mahīśāsaka said: “The bhikṣu Svāti had from a young age sustained his life by means of liquor. Later, after going forth, he could not obtain liquor, so his four great elements fell out of harmony. The bhikṣus reported this to the Buddha. The Buddha said: ‘The sick person is permitted to sniff it above the jar. If cured, he is not permitted to sniff it. If not cured, he is permitted to wash his body with liquor. If still not cured, he is permitted to mix liquor with flour to make cakes and eat them. If still not cured, he is permitted to soak himself in liquor.’”
