At that time there was an Ājīvika mendicant non-Buddhist who also dwelt in that forest, neighbouring the Venerable One. In the villages and towns not far from the forest, an extensive four-month festival was held from time to time. At that time, that non-Buddhist went around the villages and towns, gorging himself on pork and drinking liquor without restraint. Secretly carrying the leftovers, he returned to the forest and saw Śāriputra sitting beneath a tree.
