> Furthermore, this sūtra says: 'Within the body of a sentient being there are eighty thousand families of worms. If one terminates the life of one sentient being, one terminates the lives of eighty thousand families of worms. Whether roasted, boiled, pickled, or dried in the sun, there are tiny worms, flying moths, flies, and maggots that draw near to it. In this way, by extension, immeasurable living beings are indirectly killed. Although one does not kill with one's own hands, butchers do not dare eat it themselves; they kill entirely for those who eat meat. Thus we know that those who eat meat concurrently share in the sin of the karma of killing. Some monks and nuns who have left home, remaining in person in the saṅghārāma, openly gather with white-robed laity to drink wine, eat meat, and consume the pungent roots and impurities, defiling the monastery and feeling no shame before the Honoured Face. How could such a disorderly mingling be superior to non-Buddhists? Furthermore, the Nirarbuda Hell Sūtra says: 'Their bodies are like lumps of meat, devoid of consciousness.' Who are these people? They are all monks and nuns who drank wine. How could they not deeply believe in the sūtra teachings and generate profound shame in their hearts? Forsaking the true Dharma themselves, they become the same as non-Buddhists. If one devours the flesh of a sentient being's father, sentient beings will also devour one's father's flesh; if one devours the flesh of a sentient being's mother, sentient beings will also devour one's mother's flesh. In this way, elder sisters, elder brothers, younger brothers, younger sisters, sons, daughters, and the six relations all have their mutual counterparts: enmity taking vengeance upon enmity, with no release in sight.
