> "Twentieth, there are sentient beings whose appearance is extremely ugly: their bodies are black as lacquer, their faces and eyes greenish-blue, their cheeks sunken and swollen, their faces blistered and noses flat, their eyes yellowish-red, their teeth sparse and missing, their breath foul and reeking, short and bloated, with huge bellies and sunken hips, their legs crooked, backs hunched, and ribs deformed; they wear out clothes and eat excessively, are covered with foul sores of pus and blood, dropsy and dry consumption, scabies, leprosy, boils, and carbuncles—all manner of evils gathered upon their bodies. Although they draw close to others, people pay them no regard. If others commit a crime, they are unjustly implicated in its punishment. They never see the Buddha, never hear the Dharma, and never know the Saṃgha. What sin brought this about?" The Buddha said: "In their past lives, as sons they were unfilial to parents; as ministers they were disloyal to their lords; as lords they did not respect their inferiors; friends did not value their trustworthiness; villagers did not honor them for their age; the court did not grant them rank. They rushed recklessly into actions, their minds perverse and without measure. They did not believe in the Three Jewels; they killed rulers and harmed teachers, invaded states and plundered the people, attacked cities and destroyed fortresses, committed theft and robbery, and engaged in more than one evil karma. They praised themselves and disparaged others, bullied the orphaned and the elderly, slandered sages, were insolent to elders, and deceived the lowly. They committed every kind of sinful karma completely, and all evils gathered in retribution. Therefore they incurred this sinful retribution."
