> Furthermore, the Sūtra of the Ten Wheels states: The Buddha said, "Sons of good family, there are four kinds of saṃgha. What are the four? First, the saṃgha of the ultimate truth; second, the pure saṃgha; third, the dumb-sheep saṃgha; fourth, the saṃgha devoid of shame and conscience. What is called the saṃgha of the ultimate truth? The buddhas, bodhisattvas, pratyekabuddhas, and the four fruits of śramaṇahood—these seven kinds of persons are called the saṃgha of the ultimate truth. Those living at home who have attained a noble fruit are also called the saṃgha of the ultimate truth. What is called the pure saṃgha? All who hold the complete precepts are called the pure saṃgha. What is called the dumb-sheep saṃgha? Those who do not know what is an infraction and what is not, what is heavy, light, subtle, or confessional, being foolish and devoid of wisdom, not associating with good spiritual friends, and unable to inquire into deep meanings, what is good and not good—such characteristics are called the dumb-sheep saṃgha. What is called the saṃgha devoid of shame and conscience? If there are those who enter the Buddha-Dharma for their own livelihood, who completely violate the precepts, break the concordant saṃgha, do not fear the future world, indulge their six sense-faculties, and greedily crave the five desires—such persons are called the saṃgha devoid of shame and conscience." (All four saṃghas must be revered.)
