> 'What is the suffering of illness? A human is composed of the harmony of the four great elements. If one element is out of harmony, a hundred and one diseases arise; if the four great elements are out of harmony, four hundred and four diseases arise all at once. If the earth element is out of harmony, the whole body feels heavy; if the water element is out of harmony, the whole body swells; if the fire element is out of harmony, the whole body is feverish and steamy; if the wind element is out of harmony, the whole body becomes stiff and rigid. The hundred joints suffer pain as though beaten with sticks and whips. With the flux of the four elements, hands and feet become useless, vitality is exhausted, and sitting or rising requires others. The mouth is parched and the lips are scorched; tendons snap and the nose cracks; the eyes do not see forms and the ears do not hear sounds; impurities flow forth, and one lies upon them; the mind harbors anguish, and the speech expresses sorrow. Kinfolk are at one's side, watching day and night without rest. Fine dishes and delicacies are all bitter when entering the mouth. Is this not suffering?' They replied: 'Indeed it is great suffering.'
