> The Buddha said: One may also construct a caitya. One containing relics is called a stupa; one without relics is called a caitya. Places such as where the Buddha was born, where he attained the Way, where he turned the wheel of Dharma, and where the Buddha entered nirvāṇa, as well as statues of bodhisattvas, statues of pratyekabuddhas, and the places of the Buddha's footprints—at all these caityas, the Buddha's flower-canopies may be installed to make offerings. Among offerings, superior ones are offered to Buddha stupas, and lower ones are offered to caityas. If sudden wind and rain arrive, one should collect the offering implements and place them in the nearest safe location. One must not say, 'I am a senior elder, I am an araṇya alms-begging venerated monk,' and so forth; \[doing so\] incurs an offence of vinaya transgression. If thieves arrive swiftly to take the stupa and saṅgha's property, it must not be hidden away: the Buddha's property should adorn the Buddha images, the saṅgha's seat mats should be spread out, and various kinds of food and drink should be set out, so that the thieves see these signs. If \[the thieves\] give rise to compassionate thoughts, the thieves may ask: 'Monks, do not fear; come out! The young ones should come look.' If thieves arrive so suddenly that one cannot conceal the property, one should say, 'All conditioned things are impermanent.' Having spoken thus, one should abandon it and leave. This is called the method for encountering danger.
