> Furthermore, the Chuchu jing says: Just as the sand in the great ocean cannot be counted or known, so the good and evil, calamities and blessings done by people in former and later times cannot be reckoned again. The crucial point is when life ends: one who does evil meets with evil places, and one who does good meets with good places. Calamities and blessings already have their predetermined places, and there are also parents, brothers, wives, children, and kin prepared beforehand. When one attains the path, it ceases; if one does not attain the path, it never ends. The Buddha said to the bhikṣus: 'You should be mindful that your own bodies are impermanent.' One bhikṣu then answered the Buddha, saying: 'I am mindful of impermanence: as a person in the world may live at most up to fifty years.' The Buddha said: 'Do not speak such words.' Another bhikṣu said: 'It may be thirty years.' The Buddha said: 'Do not speak such words.' Another bhikṣu said: 'It may be ten years.' The Buddha said: 'Do not speak such words.' Another bhikṣu said: 'It may be one year.' The Buddha said: 'Do not speak such words.' Another bhikṣu said: 'It may be one month.' The Buddha said: 'Do not speak such words.' Another bhikṣu said: 'It may be one day.' The Buddha said: 'Do not speak such words.' Another bhikṣu said: 'It may be one hour.' The Buddha said: 'Do not speak such words.' Another bhikṣu said: 'It may be in the interval of a single breath.' The Buddha said: 'That is so.' The Buddha said: 'If the exhaled breath does not return, one belongs to the next life. Human life is fleeting, existing between a single exhalation and inhalation.'
