> Furthermore, the Ekottarika-āgama says: 'There are five matters in giving that are called timely: first, when someone comes from afar; second, when someone goes far away; third, at the time of sickness; fourth, in times of cold or heat; fifth, when one first obtains fruits and melons. If one obtains new grain, one first gives it to those who keep precepts and are vigorous, and afterward eats it oneself.' Furthermore, there are three methods of giving: first, sending food to a temple is called superior; second, going to the residence to make offerings is called middling; third, preparing food and giving it to beggars upon generating the intention to make offerings is called inferior.
