> Furthermore, the Sarvāstivāda-vibhāṣā says: There are four explanations of the proper time. First, beginning from sunrise up to midday, the light becomes increasingly blazing; this is called the proper time. From noon onward until the latter part of the night, the light diminishes and disappears; hence it is called an improper time. Second, from morning to noon, it is the time for preparing food, and begging does not give rise to stinginess \[in donors\]; hence it is called the proper time. From noon onward until the night, it is the time when worldly people feast and amuse themselves; entering the village to beg for food causes much vexation; hence it is called an improper time. Third, from morning to noon, worldly people are engaged in their tasks, and sexual misconduct and indulgence have not arisen; begging does not give rise to vexation; hence it is called the proper time. From noon onward, work ceases, and they engage in lustful play, chatter, and laughter; entering the village to beg for food invites slander; hence it is called an improper time. Fourth, from morning to noon, it is the time for begging food; obtaining food sustains the body, calms the mind to cultivate the Way, and matters accord with the Dharma; hence it is called the proper time. From noon onward, one should rely on cultivating the Way, and it is not the time for begging food; hence it is called an improper time.
