> Furthermore, the Dharmapada-avadāna-sūtra says: The Buddha asked an elephant trainer: 'How many methods are there for taming elephants?' He replied: 'There are three. What are the three? The first is hooking the mouth with a rigid hook and fastening the halter. The second is reducing food to constantly keep it hungry and lean. The third is applying sticks and whips to inflict pain upon it. By hooking the mouth with an iron hook, one controls its strong mouth. By not giving it food and drink, one controls the wildness of its body. By applying sticks and whips, one subdues its mind.' The Buddha addressed the householder: 'I also have three \[methods\] with which I tame everything, and also with which I tame myself to attain the unconditioned. The first is by means of utmost sincerity, controlling the faults of the mouth. The second is by loving-kindness and chastity, subduing the hardness of the body. The third is by means of wisdom, eliminating the cover of ignorance in the mind. Maintaining these three matters, I deliver all and cause them to leave the three bad destinies.' Furthermore, the Sūtra on the Five Messengers of King Yama says: The Buddha addressed the bhikṣus: 'When someone is born into the world and is unfilial to parents, disrespectful to śramaṇas, does not practice benevolence and righteousness, does not study the scriptural precepts, and does not fear future lives, that person at the death of the body will fall into hell. The wardens seize and take him, reporting his faults and evils to King Yama, saying: "This person was unfilial, with various faults; he has no merit, and did not fear death. May it please the King to punish him." King Yama always first speaks calmly and with upright words, showing the five messengers to him and asking:'
