> The Zabiyu jing also states: "Formerly, the Buddha's younger brother Nanda was a man at the time of Vipaśyin Buddha in the distant past. Through the merit of bathing the saṃgha once, the virtue \[of that act\] naturally followed him: he was born into the Śākya clan, his body was adorned with thirty marks, and his spiritual countenance was radiant and golden. Borne by this prior merit, he lived in the same age as the Buddha; by diligently refining himself in the place of the Way, he attained the six supernormal knowledges. If an ancient person made a single gift and still received such a vast recompense, how much more so should contemporary donors perform it abundantly! Their universal, impartial practice will surely attain the exalted title \[of Buddhahood\]; increasing in joy, they will extensively deliver all beings."
