> "King, listen attentively to what I say: / As for the field of merit, superior to the soil upon ashes, / no merit or virtue can surpass it. / As the retribution for making a Buddha image, / one is constantly born into a very wealthy family, / possessing boundless precious treasures, / and one's retinue will always be reverent. / As the retribution for making a Buddha image, / one constantly gains the reward of the divine eye, / of an incomparable deep blue color. / As the retribution for making a Buddha image, / one's parents rejoice upon seeing them; / upright, dignified, and heavy with authority, / others will love them and never weary of them. / As the retribution for making a Buddha image, / one has a golden body radiating light, / like a wondrous lion; / sentient beings rejoice upon seeing it. / As the retribution for making a Buddha image, / into the great clans of Jambudvīpa— / kṣatriyas and brāhmaṇas— / a person of merit is born among them. / As the retribution for making a Buddha image, / one is not born in a borderland country, / is neither blind nor ugly, / and the six sense faculties are always complete. / As the retribution for making a Buddha image, / on the verge of death one remembers past lives, / sees the Buddha appearing before them, / and does not feel the pain of dying. / As the retribution for making a Buddha image, / one becomes a king of great renown, / an emperor flying with the golden wheel, / who presides over the four continents. / As the retribution for making a Buddha image, / one becomes Śakra, ruler of the gods, named Indra, / second only in divine power and authority, / served by the thirty-three heavens. / As the retribution for making a Buddha image, / transcending this, one leaves the realm of desire / to become a wondrous Brahmā King, / reverenced by the multitude of Brahmā-kāyika devas. / As the retribution for making a Buddha image, / the blessings one receives are just like this. / Even if one could carve and paint them, / though heaven and earth might be measured, / this blessing cannot be measured. / Therefore, by making offerings to the Buddha / with flowers, incense, and scented ointments, / those who make offerings to the Great Being / will attain the end of taints and the unconditioned."
