### [9.83](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2123.9.83)

> Better to cut one's own body with a sharp knife,
> The flesh of one's limbs, body parts, and skin;
> What has been given with faith by others,
> Is truly difficult for a layperson to consume.
> Better to swallow a large, red-hot iron ball,
> Causing blazing flames to shoot from the mouth,
> Than for the food, drink, and utensils of the saṅgha
> To be privately used outside for oneself.
> Better to hold a great fire like Mount Sumeru
> With one's hands and consume it oneself;
> Any laypeople living in households
> Should not arbitrarily eat food offered to the saṅgha.
> Better to butcher oneself with a sharp blade,
> And eat the skin and flesh of one's own body;
> Any laypeople living in households
> Should not receive and take the varied food of the saṅgha.
> Better to cast one's own body
> Into a room full of great, fierce blazes;
> Laypeople living in households
> Should not sit or lie on the mats and beds of the saṅgha.
> Better to grasp a scalding-hot iron awl
> With one's fist so that it burns and rots,
> Than for laypeople living in households
> To privately make use of the saṅgha's goods.
> Better to mince and slice one's own flesh
> Upon a good chopping block with an exceedingly sharp knife,
> Than toward a pure renuciant person
> To give rise to a single thought of anger and resentment.
> Better to gouge out both of one's eyes with one's own hands,
> Cast them away, and fling them to the ground,
> Than toward those who practice the good Dharma
> To look upon them with resentment and anger in one's heart.
> Better to wrap one's body in hot iron plates
> As one moves east and west, walking, sitting, or lying down,
> Than with an angry, jealous mind
> To wear the pure robes given to the saṅgha.
> Better to drink lye and brine,
> Boiling hot, scalding the mouth like fire,
> Than with a covetous, angry, and evil mind
> To ingest the pure medicines offered to the saṅgha.
