> Designating a birthday as a festival began with Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang. Emperor Taiwu of the Wei established a chapel in the second year of the Shiguang era, and in the fourth year of Shenjia, an edict ordered all prefectures and garrisons to establish chapels to celebrate the emperor's birthday. In the Shiguang era, it was the emperor's own beginning of venerating blessings; in the Shenjia era, it was the beginning of ministers offering congratulations for the emperor's longevity. Ever since, whenever ministers offer auspicious congratulations, they invariably organize vegetarian feasts and chant scriptures, calling it a birthday festival chapel; today it is widely practiced.
