> Properly called Gautama in Sanskrit, also called Gautamī, translated here as 'Supreme on Earth'. This means that, aside from the devas, he was the most supreme among humankind on earth. Therefore a sūtra states: In the past, at the beginning of the kalpa, the Buddha was a king who abdicated his throne and took the ṛṣi Gautama as his master to cultivate the Way. He always roamed and rested in a garden, where he was murdered by bandits. That ṛṣi then buried the corpse, collected the blood, fashioned it into two lumps of clay, placed them in vessels, set them on the left and right, and chanted over them for a full ten months. The left transformed into a boy and the right transformed into a girl. Thereupon, the clan was named Gautama, which was the beginning.
