> The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'Those who have left household life (pravrajyā) ought not to give rise to evil, and their body and speech should correspond. I have renounced parents, wife and children, and acquaintances to leave the household life; this is precisely the time to place faith in wholesome thoughts, not the time to cultivate unwholesome thoughts.' ○ The Alamkāradharmaparyāya Sūtra says: The Golden Woman addressed Mañjuśrī, saying, 'Grant me pravrajyā.' Mañjuśrī spoke to her, saying, 'A bodhisattva's leaving the household life is not constituted merely by shaving one's own hair. If one can arouse great vigor to eliminate the afflictions of all sentient beings, this is called pravrajyā. It is not constituted by wearing dyed robes oneself and maintaining precept practices oneself. Being able to cause violators of the precepts to abide securely in pure precepts is called pravrajyā. It is not constituted by sitting alone in an araṇya and meditating. Being able to employ skillful means of wisdom amidst female forms and the cycle of birth and death to transform and liberate others is called pravrajyā. It is not constituted by guarding the vinaya with one's own person. If one can expand the four immeasurables—(kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity are the four immeasurables. The Vibhāṣā-śāstra says: 'Bestowing benefit is the mark of kindness; removing decline and loss is the mark of compassion; rejoicing and consoling when others attain is the mark of sympathetic joy; holding a mind of impartiality is the mark of equanimity')—and establish sentient beings to increase their roots of goodness, this is called pravrajyā. It is not constituted by attaining entrance into nirvāṇa by oneself. Desiring to establish all sentient beings in great nirvāṇa is called pravrajyā.' (The text is extensive and not recorded here.) ○ The Mahādharma-ulkā-dhāraṇī Sūtra says: Monastic practice has three goods: first, keeping far from jealousy (that is, when another person's closeness or superiority does not harm oneself, but one arbitrarily gives rise to envy, this is called jealousy), rejoicing in others' virtues and offering instruction; second, when acting for others, seeking no reward; third, not ruining or harming others to accomplish one's own good.
