> Namely, those four princes won people over through virtue; within a few years, it grew into a powerful state. The father king felt remorse and longing, and sent an envoy to summon the four sons, who declined on account of their fault and did not return. The father king then sighed three times, saying: 'My sons are capable (Śākya, in Chinese meaning "Capable and Benevolent").' The Dīrgha Āgama states: 'Śākya, in the Qin language, means "Capable"; it is also translated as "Straight", referring to the straightness of the trees.' (Examining these two translations: the former derives from the persons, the latter from the place.) Examining this now: all four princes were named Śākya, but only the fourth, Nikura, was our Buddha's ancestor. According to the sūtra, Nikura had a son named Kuru; Kuru had a son named Gokuru; Gokuru had a son named Siṃhahanu; Siṃhahanu had four sons: first, Śuddhodana; second, Śuklodana; third, Droṇodana; fourth, Amṛtodana. (In Sanskrit Śuddhodana, translated here as King Pure Rice, who was the Buddha's father.)
