> The Śāriputraparipṛcchā Sūtra states: "The Mahāsāṃghika school diligently studies the scriptures and proclaims the true meaning; because they reside in the root and occupy the center, they should wear yellow robes. The Dharmaguptaka school thoroughly penetrates the flavor of principle, guides and benefits, and manifests excellence; they should wear red robes. The Sarvāstivāda school is extensively knowledgeable and acutely perceptive, guiding and transforming through the Dharma; they should wear black robes. The Kāśyapīya school is diligent and valiant, protecting sentient beings; they should wear magnolia-bark-colored robes. The Mahīśāsaka school has meditative contemplation entering into the subtle, investigating and communicating the profound and secret; they should wear blue-green robes" (respectfully observing that the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states that robes of fine pure colors must not be kept, and must be spoiled into a kaṣāya color; now the Dharmaguptaka school, which is the source of the Four-Part Vinaya, itself wears red robes, which is the primary color of the south, and along with the various schools all overtly violate the Buddha's regulation. Let us now examine this: repeatedly seeing the robe colors of monks arriving from India confirms that they are all broken colors; it must be that the translators found broken colors difficult to name, and thus used names like blue-green, yellow, red, and black).
