- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.27](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2127.1.27)

> The Kaiyuan Record states: 'Prior to the Qin and Jin dynasties, those who undertook pravrajyā mostly took their master's surname. Later, the Śramaṇa Dao'an, \[whose fame\] filled heaven, said: "All who shave their hair and dye their robes inherit the Śākya lineage; thus there should be no diverse surnames, and all ought to be called the Shi (Śākya) clan." At the time, this was not yet accepted. When the Āgama sūtras were translated, they stated: "The Buddha told the bhikṣus: 'When the water of the four great rivers enters the sea, they no longer retain their original names, but are collectively called the sea. The sons of the four varṇas, when undertaking pravrajyā under the Buddha, shaving off their beard and hair, and wearing the three Dharma robes, no longer retain their original surnames, but are simply called Śramaṇa Śākyaputra.'"' ○ The Mahīśāsaka Vinaya states: 'You bhikṣus, having undertaken pravrajyā from diverse backgrounds, must all renounce your original surnames and collectively be called sons of the Śākyas.' (Now calling ourselves Śramaṇa Shi is because among those who undertook pravrajyā in Tianzhu, non-Buddhists also called themselves śramaṇas; now we distinguish them with the character Shi. Or calling oneself simply Shi is also acceptable. If addressing one another as saṃgha members, then there is no need to use it, because they belong to the same Śākya family and are Dharma brothers.)
