> The Vinaya states: 'The saṃghāṭī (great robe) is the chief among robes; therefore, it must not be worn and used anywhere and everywhere. When entering a village, when begging for food, when taking meals, when entering the assembly, when paying homage to a caitya, when listening to the Dharma, when bowing to the two preceptors and when bowing to fellow practitioners of pure conduct, one may drape the great robe in all these situations. An uttarāsaṅga (seven-strip robe) should be worn in clean places and for various activities (activities refers to reciting texts and the like). An antarvāsas (five-strip robe) may be worn at will anywhere without fault.' ○ The Five Hundred Questions states: 'If one lacks the middle robe (seven-strip), one may wear the great robe to ascend the seat to lecture and to pay homage. The five-strip robe may also be worn when entering the assembly, taking meals, paying homage, and so forth.' ○ The Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya states: 'When wearing the great robe, one must not carry stones, earth, timber, or grass, nor sweep the ground. When spreading out sitting and sleeping mats, one must not step on them with the feet, nor drag them on the ground. If one is far from a village, fold it upon the shoulder; if near a village there is a pond or pool, immediately wash the hands and feet; if there is no water, wipe away dust and dirt with grass and leaves, and only then put on the robe.'
