> Jian (犍): initial jü, final han \[jiān\]. Zhi (稚): sound zhi \[zhì\]. The Regulations on Vinaya Essentials says: 'This is translated as bell or chime.' The Five-Part Vinaya says: '\[Whatever there may be of\] earthenware, wood, copper, or iron that can sound, all are called gaṇḍī.' The Commentary on Sūtra Pronunciation says: 'Jian has the pronunciation chu; zhi has the initial zhi and final li \[zhì\]; this is translated as the sound of striking wood.' In the Five-Part Vinaya, the monks asked: 'From what wood should a gaṇḍī be made?' The Buddha said: 'Except for the lacquer tree, any other sounding wood is permitted to be used.' The Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra says: 'Kāśyapa struck a copper gaṇḍī atop Mount Sumeru.' The Ekottarika Āgama says: 'Ānanda ascended the lecture hall and struck the gaṇḍī; this is called the Tathāgata's drum of faith.' (Now examining the Vinaya: all bells, stone chimes, wooden boards, wooden fish, and mallets that make sound and can gather the assembly are called gaṇḍī. As for the wooden fish in monasteries today, it is because the ancients could not strike with unworked blocks of wood, so they created the shape of a fish. Furthermore, it must be taken from Zhang Hua's name of the Xiang fish, or from the whale striking the polao to produce a great reverberation.)
