> Anouda (nu-lu fan; the correct Sanskrit pronunciation is Anavatapta; in the Tang language it is called "Lake Without Torment" \[Wurenaochi\]. This lake is located north of the five Indias, north of the Great Snowy Mountains \[Himālaya\] and south of the Fragrant Mountains \[Gandhamādana\]; between the two mountains lies this dragon lake. Upon careful examination of the Qishi yinben jing and the Lishi apitan lun, both state that north of the Great Snowy Mountains there is this great lake, measuring fifty yojanas in length and breadth, amounting to one thousand five hundred li square. From the four sides of the lake flow four great rivers, all swirling around the lake once before emptying into the four seas. The one flowing from the eastern face is named the Śītā River, anciently translated as the Sidao River; the one from the southern face is named the Gaṅgā River, anciently named the Heng River; the one from the western face is named the Sindhu River, anciently named the Xindou River; the one flowing out to the north is named the Vakṣu River, anciently named the Boxa River. The Yellow River of this land is the lower reaches of the Śītā River on the eastern face. What is called "Without Torment" in this land is an epithet for the dragon king's meritorious virtues; all dragons suffer the torment of hot sand and the like, but the dragon king of this lake alone is free from this suffering, hence it is named after it).
