> A deva presents auspicious kuśa grass (天獻吉祥草: 獻 has the fanqie xuān + jiàn \[xiàn\]. Zheng Xuan's commentary to the Shijing says: 'Xiàn means to present, to offer.' Zheng Xuan's commentary to the Zhouli says: 'In ancient times, offering things to a ruler or elder was called xiàn.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Formed from 犬 (dog) with 鬳 phonetic.' 鬳 has the fanqie yán + jiàn \[xiàn\]. Transmitted texts write it as 捊, which is erroneous and not adopted here. The merchant presenting roasted flour below should also be interpreted according to this; it is not treated again).
