> Shaving hair and beard (鬄鬚: the upper character has the fanqie tǐ + jì \[tì\]; the lower has the fanqie xiāng + yú \[xū\]. The foreign tribes of the south have diverse personal ornaments: some shave their hair, some trim their beards, some tattoo their bodies, or wear mallet-shaped topknots, pierce their ears, go barefoot, or wear robes like morning-cloud silk (chaoxia) or cotton wraps (geman)—all are like this by custom. The character is sometimes written with 弟 as 鬀, or with 刀 as 剃; currently transmitted texts write it with 髟 as 鬄, which is correct).
