> Beating and striking: the upper character has the fanqie \*jia\* + \*rui\*. Xu Shuzhong's commentary on the \*Huainanzi\* states: '捶 (\*chui\*) means to forge,' pronounced \*dou\* + \*luan\*. The \*Kaosheng\* says: 'A stake,' pronounced \*chao\* + \*e\*. The \*Shuowen\* states: '捶 means to strike with a staff.' It has the hand radical (手) and 垂 as its phonetic component. It is also written with the wood radical as 棰; a 棰 is a club. The lower character has the fanqie \*de\* + \*leng\*. The \*Guangya\* states: '打 (\*da\*) means to strike.' The \*Picang\* states: '打 means to beat with a club.' It has the hand radical (手) and 丁 as its phonetic component. Nowadays, south of the Yangtze River in the Wu region, it is seen pronounced as \*ding\*, which is not adopted here.
