> Snares and nets: the upper character has the fanqie \*juan\* + \*quan\*. The standard graph is written as \[(ㄇ@人)/〦/月\], or also as 𦍃. The \*Kaosheng\* states: 'To catch birds and beasts with cords.' The \*Yunying\* states: 'To bind and capture.' In my view, 羂 (\*juan\*) refers to a snare (\*pāśa\*). The lower character has the fanqie \*wu\* + \*fang\*. Gu Yewang states: '網 (\*wang\*) is the general name for spreading snares and catching nets.' The \*Yijing\* states: 'In antiquity, Baoxi knotted ropes to make nets in order to hunt and fish, thereby nourishing the myriad folk.' The \*Shiben\* states: 'Mang invented nets.' Song Zhong states: 'He was a minister of Fuxi.' It is also written as 𰭓 or as \[(网-ㄨ)/亡\], which are both ancient characters.
