> Coarse and fierce: the upper character has the fanqie \*cang\* + \*hu\*. It is an abbreviated character that has long been transmitted and used. The standard graph in the \*Shuowen\* is written as 麤, composed of three deer (鹿). The character dictionary states: 'An object that is not refined.' The \*Guangya\* states: '麤 (\*cu\*) means large.' Zheng Xuan's commentary on the \*Liji\* states: '麤 means coarse and sparse.' The lower character has the fanqie \*hao\* + \*meng\* or \*wu\* + \*meng\*. The \*Jixun\* states: 'A dog that is ferocious and vicious, which cannot be approached.' Some sūtra texts write it with the stone radical as 礦, which is an error; that refers to copper, iron, and stone ores, not the original character.
