The Shiben says: 'Kunwu made pottery.' Song Zhong says: 'He was a minister of Jie of the Xia.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It derives from 阜 \[mound\] with 匋 \[táo\] phonetic.' The lower character is j-\[u\]-y-\[un\] fan, or y-\[u\]-j-\[un\] fan. The Kaosheng says: '鈞 means to equalize, level and without gradation.' Xu Shuzhong's commentary on the Huainanzi says: 'The potter's wheel (鈞陶) is the method.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It derives from 金 \[metal\] with 勻 \[yún\] phonetic.' We observe that 'potter's wheel' (陶鈞) refers to fashioning and transforming).
