> 靜㜸 (y-\[u\]-j-\[ie\] fan. The Zuo zhuan says: 'When heaven violates the seasons, it is a calamity; when earth violates natural things, it is an omen (祅), pronounced yāo.' The Kaosheng says: '㜸 means an ominous calamity. When insects and beasts act strangely, it is called 㜸; when clothing and vegetation act strangely, it is called 祅.' Current vulgar usage generally writes it as 㜸. Lü Jing's Yunji derives it from 虫 \[insect\], pronounced huǐ, writing 㜸. The standard form in character dictionaries derives from 示 \[altar\], writing 㜸, with 薛 phonetic. The Shuowen jiezi says that the character 㜸 derives from 廾, pronounced cǎo, from 巾, ch-\[ou\]-l-\[ie\] fan, from 阜, pronounced fù, and from 辛, forming 薛. Nowadays transmission has dropped the 屮 leaving 薛, which is corrupt and incomplete).
