> Galloping and racing: the upper character has the fanqie \*zhi\* + \*li\*. It is a popular character form, while the standard form is sometimes written as \[a variant of\] 駞. Although that character is the standard graph, because it has two readings and is also pronounced \*tuo\*, for now we follow the popular form and write 馳. Gu Yewang states: '馳 (\*chi\*) means to run.' The \*Guangya\* states: '馳 means to gallop.' The lower character has the fanqie \*chi\* + \*ying\*. Du Yu's commentary on the \*Zuo zhuan\* states: '騁 (\*cheng\*) means to gallop; it means to run.' The \*Guangya\* states: '騁 means to gallop.' The \*Shuowen\* states: 'It means to drive straight ahead.' It has the horse radical (馬) and 𦥚 as its phonetic component.
