> Standing out preeminently (挺特: \[first character pronounced\] tíng-dǐng fan \[tǐng\]. The Guangya says: "To jut forth." The Kaosheng says: "Erect and straight." The Shuowen says: "To pull out." It takes shǒu \[hand\] as radical and tíng as phonetic. The character tíng derives from \[彳\*、\] (yú-chǒu fan) and rèn (tiān-dǐng fan) as phonetic. The component \[彳\*、\] derives from chì and chǒu (chǐ fan), meaning to stretch out. The lower character is pronounced hè-lè fan \[tè\]. The Kaosheng says: "Tè means male; solitary." The Shuowen says: "An uncastrated bull." It takes niú \[ox\] as radical and sì as phonetic).
