The \*Shuowen\* says: "It is pickled (醶), also pronounced \*hǎn\* (減反); it takes the wine radical with 乍 as its phonetic." Nowadays popular usage uses it for toast-and-response (酬酢, \*zuò\*, 藏各反 \[d͡zɑk̚\]). The sūtra text writes it with 昔 as 醋, which popular transmission uses for the character meaning "sour" (酸酢). The pronunciation \*zuò\* (昨) for 酢 runs contrary to the \*Shuowen\*.
