> 燈燎 (lamps and torches): 燎 has two fanqie readings: \*liáo\* (遼鳥反 \[leǔ\]) and \*liào\* (遼銚反 \[leuᴴ\]; 銚 is pronounced \*yào\*, 亭曜反 \[jeuᴴ\]). The \*Kaosheng\* says: "To burn lightly." The character dictionaries say: "A courtyard torch is called 燎." The \*Shuowen\* says: "To set fire to; it takes the fire radical with 尞 (\*liào\*, 力召反 \[leuᴴ\]) as its phonetic. The orthodox form of the character 尞 takes fire and 昚, written as 𤊽; 昚 is the ancient character for 慎 (careful/reverent). Burning firewood to sacrifice to Heaven was the pinnacle of reverence and caution, which is why it takes 昚 and 火."
