> Ear pendants and ear-wheels (璫𨎶: the upper character \[pendant (璫)\] is pronounced 當 \[dāng\]. The Picang says: '璫 pierces the ear.' The Shiming says: 'Piercing the ear and suspending a pearl is called 璫.' The lower character \[ear-wheel (𨎶)\] is pronounced 渠 \[qú\]; it refers to an ear-ornament (kuṇḍala). The Kaosheng says: '𨎶 means a cartwheel.' Examining this, an ear-ornament resembles a wheel; in the Western countries, kings and noble dignitaries all fashion ear-ornaments out of gold, silver, and wondrous jewels, wearing them through the pierced ears just like precious wheels, embellished with assorted gems set between them. The sūtra text writing 渠 is a borrowed character).
