踟蹰（上雉知反下柱誅反考聲云踟蹰猶俳佪也或作躊躇上音籌下音除廣雅躊躇猶豫也考聲云躊躇不即行也毛詩傳曰躊躇猶躑䠱也踟蹰與躊躇方言輕重有異其心疑未定其義一也二字並從足形聲字也）。

> Hesitating (chichu 踟蹰: the first character is \[pronounced with the\] fanqie zhi-zhi 雉知; the second character is zhu-zhu 柱誅. The Kaosheng says: “Chichu 踟蹰 is like pacing back and forth.” It is also written as 躊躇; the first character is pronounced chou 籌, the second is chu 除. The Guangya says: “Chouchu 躊躇 means being undecided.” The Kaosheng says: “Chouchu means not proceeding immediately.” The Mao commentary on the Shijing says: “Chouchu is like pacing back and forth \[in hesitation\].” Chichu and chouchu differ merely in weight across regional dialects; their inner sense of being doubtful and undecided is one and the same meaning. Both characters are phono-semantic graphs with the 'foot' (zu 足) semantic classifier).
