The Zhuangzi says: 'To speak without distinguishing right from wrong is called flattery (諛).' Kong \[Anguo\]'s commentary on the Shangshu says: '諛 also means to fawn (讇).' In the sūtra text it is written as 諭, which is incorrect. The second character has the fanqie: chǐ + rǎn \[chǎn\]. He \[Xiu\]'s commentary on the Gongyang zhuan says: '讇 means sycophantic.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It means to flatter. It takes 言 as semantic component and 閻 as phonetic component.' 閻 has the fanqie: yǐ + zhān \[yán\]. In the sūtra text it is written as 諂; 諂 is an abbreviated form used colloquially.)
